An online course written and conducted by Laurie Scheer All too often, when I am in meetings with development personnel and producers, I hear the following demand: "We need projects that are promotable and high concept in nature." That is, if you are not able to effectively communicate your project's concept in one strong, solid sentence -- start over. That is, if you cannot capture the essence of your project in an ad that could be placed in a newspaper or magazine -- start over. Numerous scripts and treatments are extremely well written and well executed, but if you, the writer, are not able to articulate what your script/project is about, then you may never "get read." This course will outline the steps you need to take to assure that you can effectively gain attention to your project. OUTLINE: WEEK 1 - Genre. What is your genre? How to do research to assure that your genre will (or will not) find acceptance in today's marketplace. WEEK 2 - Lists, lists, and more lists. Make wish lists of cast and crew suggestions. How to find information on the surface and beyond. WEEK 3 - Attaching elements. How to gain the attention of stars, directors, producers and/or any other marketable elements that will help you get noticed and read by Hollywood. WEEK 4 - Making sure your script is ready to go out. Aside from the usual spelling and presentation effectiveness, is there anything else that you need to do to assure yourself that you are not making an idiot out of yourself? Remember, you want to continue to call upon your contacts. WEEK 5 - Assembling all information researched into a great pitch and presentation that is reflective of a High Concept and highly Promotable. So, after all that work of writing your script, now make sure you can get out there and sell it -- perhaps make it your signature script to gain a three-picture deal!
